Painted Golden Lindt Babushka on a Rock

Step-by-step photos and instructions on how to paint a Golden Lindt Babushka onto a rock. (Hover over the pictures for instructions).

Golden Babushka Step 1
You’ll need a smooth, longish, rounded rock – it can be shaped a bit like an avocado

Golden Babushka 2
Make sure the rock is clean and dry. Find a coin that fits snugly into the smaller end of the rock, leaving about 1cm on the left, top and right. This size may vary depending on the size of your rock

Golden Babushka 3
Using a white pencil if your rock is dark, carefully trace a circle around the coin

Golden Babushka 4
Using Chalk Paint, start painting the rock, leaving the circle unpainted. Try and keep the edge around the circle very neat

Golden Babushka 5
Paint your first layer of Chalk Paint over the front of the rock

Golden Babushka 6
The first layer of Chalk Paint will probably not be completely opaque if your rock is dark, but that’s fine

Golden Babushka 7
Once the first layer of Chalk Paint is dry, paint a second coat and also paint the back of the rock with 2 coats

Golden Babushka 8
When the white Chalk Paint is completely dry, use Dragon’s Gold Rock Paint to paint over the white areas, leaving the round face unpainted

Golden Babushka 9
This first layer of Dragon’s Gold should be thin, so that the white shows through. It will look horrible but it’s correct. We’re going to build up layers of gold so that the gold becomes rich and shiny

Golden Babushka 10
Paint the second and third layer of gold, remembering to allow each layer to dry completely and also remembering to paint the back of the stone

Golden Babushka 11
This rock now has 4 layers of gold and the finish is beautiful and shiny. Your next step is to make sure you have Lindt Chocolate Balls. I couldn’t get the gold ones, but that’s okay, it’s the white flowers on the wrapper that we need the reference to

Golden Babushka 12
You’ll need to eat one of the chocolate balls so that you have the wrapper

Golden Babushka 13
For best results, apply a thin layer of Primer over the whole rock. The Primer will dry clear and will create a lovely surface for the white paint, fine detailed work. Flatten out the wrapper and eat the remainder of the chocolate balls before anyone else spots them

Golden Babushka 14
We need to practice a bit first. Get yourself a piece of card (the inside of any box will do). Using your finest brush and Lily White paint, create a small, thin circle, about the size of a pea

Golden Babushka 15
Paint thin horizontal, parallel lines inside the circle

Golden Babushka 16
Paint more thin horizontal lines going the other way to cross the lines you have already painted

Golden Babushka 17
Paint a thin stem. Keep looking at your reference so that you know what to paint. You don’t have to copy the reference exactly but it does give you a good guideline

Golden Babushka 18
Paint a little leaf at the end of the stem

Golden Babushka 19
Paint another leaf

Golden Babushka 20
And a few more leaves. Keep the spacing of the balls and leaves as similar as you can to the Lindt wrapper reference

Golden Babushka 21
Now. making sure your brush is kept clean regularly while you work, first paint a circle line, about the size of a pea, onto the gold area on the rock which has a layer of Primer. Don’t paint any shapes too close to the round face area

Golden Babushka 22
Paint the parallel lines

Golden Babushka 23
Paint the parallel lines across the ones you have already done, paint a stem

Golden Babushka 24
Paint a leaf, these steps are exactly as per your practice sheet in steps 14 to 21

Golden Babushka 25
Paint more levea

Golden Babushka 26
It’s starting to look like your practice piece

Golden Babushka 27
Start the process again by painting a thin line circle, the size of a pea

Golden Babushka 28
Continue by painting stems and leaves next to the circle, followed by another circle, lines, stems and leaves, slowly filling up the gold area but leaving some space around the face

Golden Babushka 29
Using a mid-sized dotting tool, create evenly sized and evenly spaced dots all around the edge of the round face area, on the gold, but leaving a very small gap so that your dots do not touch the edge of the circle

Golden Babushka 30
Carry on with the dots all around the face area

Golden Babushka 31
When these dots are dry, pick a dotting tool with one size bigger ball

Golden Babushka 32
Dot all around the inside of the circle, just touching the edge of the gold but not overlapping onto the smaller dots which are already there

Golden Babushka 33
Back to the balls and leaves, now add a few extra stems

Golden Babushka 34
Add dots to the ends of the new stems

Golden Babushka 35
Continue with your balls, syems, leaves, more stems and dots until the whole front of the Babushka is complete. Then add some free-standing dots in between the shapes, where there are little gaps

Golden Babushka 36
Once complete, there will be a few dots in between the shapes

Golden Babushka 37
Using a white pencil, softly draw the closed eyelids

Golden Babushka 38
Also draw a little heart for the mouth

Golden Babushka 39
Using a very fine brush and Lily White, paint the thin lines for the eyelids

Golden Babushka 40
Using Piggy Pink and a fine brush, paint the heart-shaped mouth. This might need 2 layers of pink

Golden Babushka 41
Your gorgeous Golden Lindt Babushka is complete

Golden Babushka 42
When the paint is all completely dry, give her a light varnish
