Painted Kit Kat rocks

Step by step photos on how to paint a Kit Kat on a rock.

If you find rocks which are a little odd-shaped on one end or a rock that has a broken edge, these rocks are perfect as Kit Kat rocks. I recommend getting yourself a kit Kat for reference. Eat the chocolate, keep the wrapper. Follow the step-by-step tutorial to create your own yummy delicious Kit Kat. You’ll need Chocolate Brown, Lily White, Poppy Red, Fudge Brown and Sterling Silver paints. To order your paints, click here.

Painted Kit Kat rock tutorial step 1 — Step one Find yourself some suitable shaped rocks, the more jagged end can be the chocolate end. Paint a third of the rock using Chocolate brown paint

Painted Kit Kat rock tutorial step 2 — Step two Then paint the other two-thirds of the rock white, using Lily White paint. A second coat might be needed if the original rock is quite dark in colour. A third layer of white should go onto only the top are of the rock

Painted Kit Kat rock tutorial step 3 — Step three Once the white paint is dry, mark out an oval line in pencil, then paint the thin oval line on the top white area of the rock using Poppy Red paint and a fine brush

Painted Kit Kat rock tutorial step 4 — Step four Using a pencil, outline the words Kit Kat (as much as you can fit in without squashing the lettering)

Painted Kit Kat rock tutorial step 5 — Step five Fill in the words Kit Kat using a fine brush and Poppy Red paint

Painted Kit Kat rock tutorial step 6 — Step six Using Poppy Red again, paint the remainder of the white area red, leaving an even white border around the thin red line.

Painted Kit Kat rock tutorial step 7 — Step seven Once dry, give the rock a second coat of red

Painted Kit Kat rock tutorial step 8 — Step eight When the red is completely dry, mask an area where the barcode will be painted. If you don’t have masking tape, you can also use cellotape or just paint freehand (and touch up with red paint afterwards)

Painted Kit Kat rock tutorial step 9 — Step nine With a fine brush and a steady hand, paint the lines of a barcode between the strips of masking tape using Lily White paint

Painted Kit Kat rock tutorial step 10 — Step ten When the white lines are dry, gently remove the masking tape then add the numbers with a fine brush and Lily White paint

Painted Kit Kat rock tutorial step 11 — Step eleven Add more detail to the sides of the Kit Kat, such as the weight (you can actually weigh the rock first, just for fun, and paint the correct weight on the rock)

Painted Kit Kat rock tutorial step 12 — Step twelve If you can find the space, paint “Have a break, Have a Kit Kat” on the remaining side of the rock using Lily White

Painted Kit Kat rock tutorial step 13 — Step thirteen Using a fine brush and a steady hand, paint the fine white line highlights on the lettering, using Lily White paint

Painted Kit Kat rock tutorial step 14 — Step fourteen Using Fudge brown paint, paint the end part of the rock, leaving an even chocolate border around the Fudge colour. One layer of paint is enough because the texture will add to the authentic look

Painted Kit Kat rock tutorial step 15 — Step fifteen Use an old brush that doesn’t keep its bristles nice and together anymore, to paint parallel lines across the fudge area. They should be neat and straight but the paint coverage can be uneven

Step sixteen To finish off the rock, paint the ‘foil’ area of the wrapper using Sterling Silver paint. The edge between the chocolate and wrapper area can be a straight edge of silver, then the area over the chocolate can be more zig-zagged. Keep the edges of your lines clean and straight
