Painted Cactus Rocks

Step by step photos on how to paint a Cactus on a rock.

Painted Cactus Rocks step 1 — Step one Gather an assortment of smooth, rounded rocks. They can be short and rounded or long and cigar-shaped, almost any rounded shape will work. If they are dark, give them an undercoat of white, if they are light in colour, no need for a white undercoat

Painted Cactus Rocks step 2 — Step two Using a rough mix of Apple Green and Olive Green, paint the rocks all round. You should let the one side dry before painting the other side. The paint does not have to be 100% mixed together, this will make for some subtle streaks and texture which looks great

Painted Cactus Rocks step 3 — Step three Once the base green is dry, use a mix of Jet Black and olive green to create the shadow areas, one through the middle front, middle back and sides.

Painted Cactus Rocks step 4 — Step four The dark area will get narrower at the top edge and the bottom edge where they meet. To make the areas narrower, paint more of the lighter green mix if your shaded area becomes too wide. Allow the edge of the shaded area to be straight but roughly blended (not a neat edge). This will make it look more natural

Painted Cactus Rocks step 5 — Step five Once all the paint is dry, add a thin line of Canary Yellow paint down the centre of all four lighter green areas. The yellow line should just be a thin layer of paint and the four yellow lines will meet at the top and bottom of the rock

Painted Cactus Rocks step 6 — Step six Using Lily White paint, dab a line of white dots down the length of the yellow line on all four sides, allowing each line of dots to dry before doing the next. These do not need to be perfect tots, dabs are fine

Painted Cactus Rocks step 7 — Step seven With a fine brush and Lily White paint, paint thin white lines for thorns radiating out of each white dab. The lines can be unevenly spaced, some short, some long. Allow areas to dry before moving to the next area to avoid smudging

Painted Cactus Rocks step 8 — Step eight Once all the thorns are painted, go back over the white dabs with a dab of Canary Yellow paint, allowing each line to dry before starting the next

Painted Cactus Rocks step 9 — Step nine With a fine brush and Jet Black paint, make tiny little black dots inside the yellow dots. Some can be bigger, some smaller, some can have two black dots and others have no dots

Painted Cactus Rocks step 10 — Step ten Once all the thorns are complete, your cactus rock is ready to ‘plant’ into a pot
