Step by step photos on how to paint a Lady Bug on a rock. (Hover over the pictures for instructions)

You can use any flat, oval pebble to create your cute Lady Bug. Paints used are Cherry Red, Jet Black and Lily White. Once complete, you can varnish your Lady Bug with Rock Paint Varnish to prevent scuffing and to keep it water resistant.

Step one Using a white pencil or any ordinary pencil, mark off the head area which should be just less than a third of the pebble. Mark it on both sides of the pebble.

Step two Use Lily White paint to paint the body area area of the Lady Bug, keeping a clean straight paint line where you marked off the head area.

Step three Paint the top and sides, allow to dry then paint the underside as well, in the same way.

Step four Give the top and sides, a second coat of white, allow to dry then give the underside a second coat as well, keeping the paint smooth.

Step five Once the paint is dry, paint the head area using Jet Black paint. Allow to dry and then paint the underside in the same way making sure to keep the line where the head meets the body as straight and clean as you can. Once the black paint is dry, check to see if you need a second coat of black. If the original pebble is quite dark, you won’t need a second coat, if the pebble is light in colour, you might need a second coat of black.

Step six Paint the body area using Cherry Red paint. The reason we use an undercoat of white with bright colours is so that the colours take on the luminosity of the white and can show their true colours. If red is painted over a dark colour, it will look dull. You only need to paint the top and sides of the pebble red. Allow red paint to dry and you will probably need a second coat of red.

Step seven Once the red paint is dry, turn the pebble over and paint the base black, keeping a nice clean line where the base meets the red on the edges.

Step eight Give the base a second coat of black paint.

Step nine Using a pencil, mark a straight line from the centre of the head area where it meets the body, to the centre bottom of the red body area.

Step ten Using a fine brush, paint a steady straight line over the pencil line and allow to dry.

Step eleven Using a pencil, draw random sized circles over the body area, leaving space between the circles.

Step twelve Paint the circles using Jet Black paint, allow to dry.

Step thirteen Give a second coat if needed. Try to keep your paint layer thin and rather do a second coat instead of applying the paint too thickly in one go.

Step fourteen Once the black dots are dry, mark the eyes on the head using a white pencil crayon.

Step fifteen Paint the white eyes using Lily White and give them a second coat when dry.

Step sixteen Use a tiny blob of Jet Black paint on the end of your brush to make the black pupils.
